The Making of Blackfoot Summer Pow Wow

Blending Indigenous drum traditions with modern electronic production — why this track took longer to get right than any other on the album.

This track scared me more than any other on the collection. The responsibility of it. Indigenous drum traditions carry centuries of meaning, ceremony, and identity — you don't just sample that and move on.

I spent weeks listening before I touched a single knob. Recordings of Blackfoot pow wow drumming, conversations with people who carry that tradition, understanding the difference between a war song and a round dance and a honor song. The rhythms are not interchangeable. They mean specific things.

What I built is not a sample of those traditions — it's a conversation with them. The electronic elements respond to the drum patterns rather than overriding them. The bass comes in where the drum breathes. The synths fill the space the drum leaves open.

The summer setting was intentional. Pow wows in summer carry a particular energy — community, celebration, the smell of sage and fry bread, kids running between the dancers. I wanted the track to feel warm even when the bass gets heavy.
